Went into a cave on the weekend at Yanchep National Park. It was a relatively young, small cave. Far from the most spetacular cave I have been in. Jenolan Caves near Sydney or the some of the caves located in South Western Australia would be on my list of recommended caves.
The caves at Yanchep have definitely suffered from humans. A lot of the stalactites were broken, and some of the stalagmites have gone all brown from too many human hands. Seems like in days gone by - everything could be plundered. Witness the lack of old growth forests surrounding Perth. The forest have recovered, but not fully.
The Yanchep caves are very dry caves. The stream that once flowed no longer does. A drier climate and the heavy use of bore water have meant a drop in the water table. Now the cave is quite dry. A good place to escape the heat and the flies.
Had a chat to some cavers afterwards. Check out their web page
